Trail Mix!! It is so delicious and easy to pack on hikes, planes, and long camping trips, but it is often loaded with junk! ...corn syrup, yellow number 5, artificial flavors... you name it! So how do we make a super quick trail mix without sacrificing our clean eating goals? This delicious Chocolatey Coconut GORP has clean ingredients only requires 2 steps: measure and mix.
What is GORP?
This trail mix goes back to the roots of trail mixes, with Good Old Fashioned Raisins and Peanuts. GORP!
I just love that name.
Nowadays many GORPs have candy-coated chocolate and other fruits and sugars. Some aren't so bad but I couldn't find any that were completely dairy free. So I had to make my own without skimping on the chocolaty goodness, because that's the best part! Especially in the first part of a long climb before you hit your groove and you need some motivation. 🙂
GORP for the 10th Mountain Division Hikes in CO
This particular trail mix I packed for a hut trip to Francie's Cabin. In Colorado, we have these amazing 10th mountain division huts.
They vary in levels of fanciness but all have some sort of kitchen and bathroom and tons of access to the beautiful outdoors - all year round! You can reserve a spot and camp out into the wilderness but still stay in these amazing structures. I suggest you check it out!
Francie's is an easy climb with a beautiful space that affords you lots of options for day hikes, whether it's to Mohawk lake, Crystal peak, the Crystal lakes or the back of Breckenridge Ski Resort.
We meandered up and claimed our bunks before climbing up to see the crystal lakes. Believe me, I was snacking on this trail mix throughout the day!
Then we enjoyed some delicious Thai chicken pasta with zoodles before watching the stars. I got some pretty neat long exposures that trip.
How to make Chocolatey Coconut GORP
The Chocolatey coconut GORP only has 4 ingredients:
- peanuts, dry roasted unsalted, 1 cup
- raisins, 3/4 cup
- chocolate chips, 1/2 cup
- coconut flakes, 1/2 cup
To make this trail mix, simply mix all of the ingredients together evenly and enjoy!
A note for you -> Any dried fruit works: cherries, blueberries, pineapple, etc. I stuck with raisins because after three stores those were literally the only dried fruit I could find without added sugar. And no one has time to keep searching at more than three stores! If you know of some dried blueberries or cherries without added sugar - Please Tell Me!!!
For chocolate, I use enjoy life chocolate chips because they are free of dairy and soy!
